The Mission
While watching some Modded Let's Plays, I learned of these fancy things called Magnum Torches, and was inspired. I decided to try the concept in Vanilla with command blocks.
My take on it is to build a scarecrow to make an area safe from mobs.

Scarecrow!
What does it do?
The scarecrow defines the center point of a 50 x 50 area. All Zombies, Skeletons, Endermen, Witches, Creepers, and Spiders spawning in this area are immediately turned invisible and teleported straight down to -9000 to die in the void. Just before teleporting, an invisible, AI disabled, named Silverfish is spawned at the same location to prevent further spawns. So that the Silverfish don't get in your way while trying to place blocks, any of these special Silverfish within 3 blocks of a player will also be teleported into the void to die. Furthermore, any of these placeholder silverfish that are on or one block above any sort of rail will also be instantly teleported into the void to prevent minecarts having issues.
How do I get one?
Constructing the scarecrow is simple and inexpensive. It is meant to be something fairly easy to get early on so you can protect your base without the ugliness of torch spam. If you think they are ugly too, well you can just bury it in the ground!
First, gather the following:
1x Armor Stand
1x Leather Tunic
1x Leather Pants
1x Pumpkin
1x Iron Hoe
4x Glowstone
4x Spiderweb
12x Wheat
Next, in a custom crafter, follow the recipes below:

Before making the scarecrow, you can dye the armor pieces any color you like.
Lastly, place the Armor Stand on the ground and start equipping the items on it. The head, shirt, and pants can be placed in any order. The hoe can only be added once the arms become visible. When all items are in place, the armor stand locks, the head lights up, and no further changes can be made short of destroying it. At this point the Scarecrow is active and mobs will disappear from sight!
